Agents created, deployed or connected across systems faster than the organisation can inventory them, assign ownership, control their permissions, monitor their behaviour and retire them when they no longer fit. The term moved to board level during 2026.

Measured corollary: fewer than half of organisations have visibility on their own agent inventory, and around half of agents operate in silos, with no coordination and no shared context.

What it means for an SME running AI

Sprawl is not a volume problem, it is an ownership problem. An agent without a named owner has no one to stop it.
